Wasteland/Short Fragments

Young performers in Zurich developed their own physical and vocal journeys based on the themes of T.S. Eliot’s poem “The Wasteland”. Published nearly a century ago, it reflects upon the fatigue and disorientation after a global cataclysm – a common theme which resonated with the three performers. Siu Hei Chung, Muriel Fischer and Alexandra Kienitz devised short performative scores with some points of connection between the different vocal and physical journeys.

The training and rehearsal period of “Wasteland/Short Fragments” started in May and June and continued in September 2021. Owing to Covid restrictions the training took place outdoors. There were two performances, one at Rieterpark in Zurich on September 22nd 2021, and one at the Youth Theatre Festival in Belgrade on October 2nd 2021.

The project was part of the international “Initiative – Inclusion – Interaction – Contemporary Theatre for Active Youth” project with the support of the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union, and was done in co-operation with the “Crisis and Communitas” project, led by Prof Dorota Sajewska (Slavic Studies Department, University of Zurich).
